This project supports women and young people living in the rural areas of Dakshinkali, south of the Kathmandu Valley, and Indrasarowar, south-west of the capital. It aims to improve their access to education, strengthen their vocational and agricultural skills, and support the creation of income-generating activities. The project also places particular emphasis on women’s entrepreneurship, raising awareness of women’s rights and the development of sustainable agricultural practices.
- Key objectives:
• To provide access to education and skills development for women and young people in rural areas
• To set up and support groups of women agricultural entrepreneurs in neighbouring villages, with a view to promoting entrepreneurship
• To raise awareness within communities about women’s rights and empowerment, with a view to strengthening gender equality
- The main initiatives :
• To support the education and skills development of rural women and young people through open-school programmes, academic support and accommodation solutions
• To offer practical training in sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship and other vocational skills that promote employment
• To raise awareness of women’s rights and encourage the sharing of knowledge through community sessions
- Sustainability of the project :
• Community empowerment: equipping beneficiaries with the knowledge and skills they need to become more self-reliant
• Institutional anchoring: developing partnerships with local authorities, schools and agricultural institutions to ensure the continuity of initiatives

The project aims to directly benefit more than 1,000 people:
- young people in rural areas
- farmers
- women.
The specific objectives include support for ‘open’ school education, i.e. without fees, no age limit and adapted to different profiles thanks to adapted timetables. This support is aimed at :
- training 300 farmers,
- the creation of 2 additional groups of farmer-entrepreneurs
- residential support for 12+ students.
The Shikharapur Community Learning Centre (SCLC) is a Nepalese community organisation founded in 2006 in the Dakshinkali region, south of Kathmandu. Its mission is to make education accessible to all and to promote sustainable improvements in living conditions through lifelong learning. The centre operates primarily in four areas: community education, local employment and community development.
SCLC offers programmes in literacy, formal and non-formal education, back-to-school schemes and vocational training. Its open school enables young people and adults who have dropped out of school to resume their studies, whilst its programmes for women enhance their access to education and their independence. Some of these educational methods were first trialled in Pharping before being adopted in other districts of Nepal.
The organisation also runs training programmes in sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship and income-generating activities. Its agricultural learning centre, which grew out of the ‘Bottle House’, welcomes over 1,000 visitors a year and offers farmers and young people in rural areas opportunities for training, experimentation and support. A family literacy programme has also benefited more than 240 mothers and children from six villages.
By mobilising women, farmers, young people and local groups, SCLC seeks to strengthen communities’ capacity to devise their own solutions to build greater resilience.
The project is taking place in Dakshinkali Municipality, Ward No. 5, Pharping, with an extended scope to Dakshinkali Municipality of Kathmandu and Indrasarowar Rural Municipality of Makwanpur District.
